Central Muizenberg is a declared conservation area, while there are many heritage buildings beyond this designated area.
Any alterations or renovation work envisaged for a house or building older than sixty years must be overseen by a heritage architect, and plans must be submitted to the Heritage Section of the Cape Town City Council. This body in turn submits the plans to Heritage Western Cape, who in turn revert back to the community, in the form of the Muizenberg Historical Conservation Society. This registered conservation body scrutinizes building plans on behalf of the community before passing comment. In this way several checks and balances are in place to ensure that we conserve and treasure our unique built heritage.
